WOMEN DO POLITICS – PART 1

“Women Do Politics” is an initiative launched by Women in Front in cooperation with the British Embassy with 2 main purposes:

1. Promoting exhaustively prominent women in the media by inviting them to the main political talk shows on TVs, aiming at creating active role models in different fields and especially in politics.
2. Advocating for their rights and duties to reach a fair political representation by lobbying to endorse women’s quota in the new electoral law.

Through advocacy and exhaustive media coverage, this program aims at changing negative perceptions and discriminatory rules that hinder women’s political participation and increase women’s influence in the Lebanese political scene.

Our Cooperation

Acknowledging the power of media to circulate an enhanced and positive image of women and amplify their voices in the country’s political scene, we are seeking by this letter to invite the Ministry of Communication, in cooperation with Women in Front and nationwide media, to support a national media charter that encourages and mobilizes all national channels of communication and information to:

• Promote an image that duly reveals the vital role women play in society by underlining their contribution as economic, social and political actors as opposed to confining them to stereotypes roles and social clichés.
• Improve the visibility of politically active women and their access to media by inviting and involving them in political shows, giving them media platforms to speak and be interviewed on hot political topics and working on ensuring a gender-balanced representation that effectively includes women’s voices.
• Combat the degrading and pejorative image women have in the media and acknowledge the detrimental effects of this image on society.
• Endorse the message that women have the capacities, rights and duties to participate equally in democratic governance.
• Support the call for wider female representation within public decision-making and political leadership.
• Endorse proper and fair legislations that secure women’s political representation like quota.
• Support women’s political representation through campaigns that bring this topic to the forefront of political agendas and shape policy makers decisions.
